The Vilnius University Wind Orchestra “Oktava” invites audiences to the concert “Two Faces” – a musical journey between two different worlds of sound. On 30 May at 17:00, a two-part programme will be performed at the VU Aula Magna (M. K. Čiurlionio St. 21).
The first part of the concert will reveal the colours of classical wind orchestra music. The programme will feature Kazys Daugėla’s “Lithuanian Dances”, Kurt Gäble’s “Celtic Flutes”, and John Tatgenhorst’s “Above and Beyond” – works that earned the orchestra top awards at the 26th Lithuanian Wind Orchestra Championship this year, including the Grand Prix in Category D, as well as awards for best conductor and soloists.
The second part of the concert is dedicated to the recently departed composer Gordon Goodwin. His big band-inspired compositions – “Horn of Puente”, “Mueva los Huesos”, “Backrow Politics”, “Jazz Police”, “A Few Good Men”, and “Count Bubba” – will reveal the orchestra’s energetic, rhythmic, and improvisation-driven side.
This concert is an opportunity to experience two distinct musical languages in one evening and discover the wide-ranging repertoire of the orchestra.
Admission is free.

“Oktava” is one of the artistic groups of the Vilnius University Culture Centre. Founded in 1951, the orchestra brings together more than 60 members unafraid to take on musical challenges across a wide range of genres – from classical and jazz to rock music. Most orchestra members are Vilnius University students – future doctors, physicists, teachers, and representatives of many other fields of study. The orchestra actively nurtures the tradition of wind music and regularly performs both in Lithuania and abroad. The ensemble is led by conductor, long-time orchestra member, and trumpeter Donatas Viaževičius.
The event is organised by the Vilnius University Culture Centre. The VU Culture Centre unites 16 art groups and creative studios, annually inviting the city community to experience a diverse range of cultural events and artistic experiences. More information:
