The Vilnius University Drama Theatre was born alongside Vilnius University and has since become an integral part of it. In 1570, the first student performance, “Hercules” by S. Tucci, was built in one of the courtyards. It marked the beginning of theatre history not only at Vilnius University but also at Lithuania.

Director Vladas Limantas left a striking trace of VU theatre history. He revived the old traditions and announced the new VU courtyard theatre. While working in VU theatre, V. Limantas brought together a large group of enthusiastic directors. L. Ciunis, N. Kurklietytė, A. Čepaitytė, R. Venckus, G. Kličius, G. Aukštikalnis, and others worked with him for a long time. For over two decades, Vilnius University courtyards, halls, and corridors were bubbling with intense, lively, and diverse theatrical life, sometimes moving to other historical places, such as Trakai Castle. In 1990, Marija Misiūnaitė turned the steering wheel towards a delicately nuanced psychological theatre, seeking harmony between stage elements.

In 1990, Rimantas Venckus created an alternative chamber drama group to extend the long dramaturgy-based traditions of VU drama theatre. For 15 years, this group worked in a small cellar in the courtyard of L. Stuoka-Gucevičius, where they got its name - Minimum. Since 2005, the Vilnius University Drama Theatre has been rehearsing in the theatre Hall.

In 2021, the Vilnius University drama theatre entered a new stage with director Felicija Feiferė.
